What are Domains?

One of the most important requirements for establishing a successful online presence is the domain. It is what visitors will observe first when they come across your website and what they will identify you with. The domain should be easy to memorize, but should also be something that notifies your web page's visitors what the website is about.

Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs)

A domain traditionally is composed of two constituents - a Top-Level Domain (TLD) and a Second-Level Domain Name (SLD). If you have domain.com, for example, ".com" is the Top-Level Domain and "domain" is the SLD. There are a couple of groups of TLDs that you should consider prior to selecting the domain you want. Your pick should depend on the intention of your web page and on its target viewers. Let's explore the gTLDs, or generic TLDs - these are the most popular Top-Level Domains aimed to indicate a given purpose - .com (business enterprises), .net (network infrastructures), .biz (companies), .info (informative websites), .org (organizations of a non-commercial character), .mobi (mobile devices), .asia (the Asia Pacific), .name (persons or relatives), .pro (specific walks of life), and so on. As you can perceive, these TLDs cover most spheres of life, so you should choose the one that would show the purpose of your website best. There is no restriction as to who can register such domains, but some of them involve extra procedures to prove that you are eligible to have such a TLD (.mobi and .pro, for example).

Country-code Top-Level Domain Names (ccTLDs)

The ccTLDs, or country-code TLDs, are country-specific TLDs. Each country has its own ccTLD. Settling on such a domain is good if your target group of website visitors is from a particular country. Many people would prefer to buy commodities or services from a local website, and if your aim is Canada, for instance, selecting a .ca domain could boost the visits to your web page.

Domain Name Redirects

You can register several domains, which can send your web page's visitors to a certain web page like domain.com, for example. This would boost the traffic and lower the risk of someone swiping your web site visitors by registering the same SLD with a different TLD - if you are not using a trademark.

Name Servers (NSs)

Every Top-Level Domain Name has domain records. The name server records (NS records, aka DNS records) exhibit where the domain is hosted, i.e. they point to the web hosting provider whose name servers (NSs, aka DNSs) it is utilizing at present. You can substitute the name servers of your domain name at any time. You can have your domain registered with one firm and get the web hosting service itself from another. So, if you register your domain name and find good website hosting solutions someplace else later, you can point your domain to the present company's DNSs immediately.

Domain Server Records (NS Records)

On the whole, as long as your domain name uses a given set of name servers, all its NS records will lead to the same hosting supplier. Some web hosting providers, though, enable you to edit certain name server records, like the A records and the MX records of your domain. The A record is an IP address, which shows on which server your site is hosted, while the MX records exhibit which server tackles the e-mailbox accounts associated with your domain name. For instance, if you hire a new web page designer and he sets up an .ASP web page that will be hosted on his personal Windows web hosting server, you may wish to change only the Internet Protocol address (the A record) but not the MX records of your domain name. So, www.domain.com will direct to the Windows hosting server, but your e-mail box accounts or any sub-domains like forum.domain.com or shop.domain.com will still be in your current Linux web hosting account. The .ASP environment is invented by Microsoft and calls for a Windows hosting server, even though a Linux hosting server would be far more reliable.
